The Bishop house is a family home of witches, that has contained up to 5 people: Rebecca Bishop and Stephen Proctor, their daughter Diana Bishop, and Diana's aunts: Emily Mather and Sarah Bishop. When Diana was 7, her parents went to a trip in Africa alone and were killed by their own kind for their powers. The little girl grew up with her aunts, remaining traumatized after her parents' deaths. In the meanwhile, Diana Bishop tried to learn spells, but coudn't because her parents spell-locked her powers before they went to Africa. She became an university professor at Oxford and worked especially at the Bodleian library. She pretended that her powers didn't exist and lived like a human being rather than a witch. One day, while at the Bodleian library she found Ashmole 782 The Book of Life which contained the history of the three creatures: witches, vampires and demons, not knowing about the book's power. It was a magical book that every creature wanted, but was lost centuries earlier. Diana was scared by the book, so she turned it back in to the library. After this, Diana Bishop caught the attention of the witches, vampires and demons, especially of a scientist vampire, named Matthew Clairmont. He started following her, and surprisingly, they fell in love. This was forbidden by the Congregation, (a group created in 1200 to govern the supernatural beings) so they hid from the "eyes" of the Congregation at Sept-Tours in Auvergne, France, the de Clermont family home. There, Diana met Ysabeu, Matthew's mother, and Marthe, her maid. Later, Diana was kidnapped by a witch named Sätu Jarvinen a Congregation member. She took her to The Pierre castle, the residence of Gerbert D'aurillac, a vampire member of the Congregation. Sätu tortured Diana, trying to uncover her powers. Fortunately, Matthew and his brother, Baldwin, found her, but Sätu had already left. After some time Diana discovered a part of her powers and travelled back in time with Matthew to 1590, to find a better witch that could teach her magic, trying to locate the Book of Life and hide from the Congregation. After completing her training, Diana and Matthew returned to the present, Diana being pregnant with twins. Adventures continue in these fantasy-romance bestsellers written by Deborah Harkness. An impressive story about magic and science, history and fiction, passion and power, secrets and truths.
