Meridiana is an ancient witch held in thrall by Gerbert of Aurillac.

Background[]

Meridiana is not a character in the books, but her name is mentioned by Gerbert. She appears to be a combination of elements from legends concerning real-life historical figure Pope Sylvester II, formerly Gerbert of Aurillac.

Gerbert was supposed to have built a brazen head. This "robotic" head would answer his questions with "yes" or "no". He was also reputed to have had a pact with a female demon called Meridiana, who had appeared after he had been rejected by his earthly love, and with whose help he managed to ascend to the papal throne.[1]

TV Series[]

Gerbert keeps the masked head of Meridiana in a box and awakens her with a drop of his blood when he wishes to ask her a question. She gives the following prophecy:

Beware the witch with the blood of the lion and the wolf, for with it she will destroy the children of the night.

Peter Knox warns Satu Järvinen that Gerbert is rumored to have kept a witch in thrall for centuries. Ysabeau de Clermont mentions that La Pierre was the site where this took place.

Meridiana is set free in death by Satu, whom she names as a Weaver.
