Dr. Miriam Shephard, a Vampire, is introduced in A Discovery of Witches as a lab colleague of Matthew Clairmont. Miriam is also responsible for the computer security system in the lab.

Background[edit | edit source]

History[edit | edit source]

Miriam is described as initially irritable, disapproving, catty and unfriendly, but she ultimately accepts Diana.  Miriam resents that her husband was executed as a scapegoat during the time of the Saracens, and blames Matthew. Miriam is petite, with dark eyes and flat black curls. She can move unusually quickly and enjoys film noir.

She helps Matthew protect Diana Bishop from creatures in the library after Diana discovers Ashmole 782.  She also helps save Diana's life when a vampire attacks Diana. She tells Matthew to stop fussing at her while she is attending to Diana, as she was doing this long before he was reborn.

TV Series[edit | edit source]

Unlike most vampires, Miriam Shephard is frank and honest; speaking her mind with passion and without fear. Though loyal to Matthew, she is not the least bit cowed by him or his lofty position. In part this is because Miriam is completely comfortable with who and what she is: a predator. Creatures, no matter who they are, need to earn her respect. Once they do, Miriam is an unshakable ally and friend. She is very much Matthew’s second in command and his watchdog, not only protecting his well-being, but Diana’s too.[1]
