William Cecil, 1st Baron Burghley, was the chief adviser of Queen Elizabeth I for most of her reign. He served as Secretary of State for two separate periods, 1550–53 and 1558–72. He then held the role of Lord High Treasurer from 1572 until his death in 1598.
